18 point checklist

All pre purchase boat inspections include the following...

  • Check over engine for fire or corrosion damage and verify engine hours​
  • Run up the engine from a cold start
  • Perform compression and spark test
  • Remove propeller and gearbox, inspect water pump condition
  • Check thermostat operation and pressure relieve poppet valves
  • Check gearshift/throttle/steering operation
  • Check battery charge and load test battery
  • Remove fuel filters and inspect for water
  • Check fuel lines and connections
  • Test steering lock to lock
    Inspect battery and connections
  • Test all electronics on board and call coast guard on VHF
  • Check trim/tilt system and levels
  • Check cooling system
    Inspect water pump and gear oil
  • ​Check anchor and warp
  • Test remote controls and tilt switches
  • Check trailer in a good structural condition with surface rust only, tyres and springs all ok, WOF current

aDDITIONAL tIPS

Before arranging the boat pre purchase inspection, here are some things to check:

  • ​Make sure you can start the outboard and it idles smoothly
  • Run the motor and place your hand on the cylinder head and exhaust plates. They should feel very warm, not hot to touch. ​ ​
  • Look over the boat hull for damage and wear and tear
  • Check the trailer for obvious rust on the axles
  • Ask for a service history on the boat and if possible get copies of previous service invoices
